Description:
This course introduces students to the basic knowledge and skills to be able to complete scuba certification. It consists of two main phases: Knowledge development (independent online study with in-person discussions) that include safety procedures, pressure changes and the human body, and basic skills overview. Confined water dives (indoor heated pool) where students will be taught and practice basic scuba and snorkel skills. After successful completion of this course students will be ready to take the third step towards a lifelong scuba certification by completing 5 open water dives at a location of their own choosing. Students are required to provide their own mask, snorkel, fins and boots. Class meets on Thursday, February 24th at the Ames Hunziker Center and Sundays at the Ankeny Campus Trail Point Pool: March 6, March 27, April 3, April 10, April 17, April 24. Physical requirements ? Students must be able to complete 200 yards of uninterrupted swim, any stroke, with no time limit, and be able to swim 45 yards under water. General health requirements - No invasive medical procedures at least six months prior to class, healthy respiratory and circulatory system, and students must be 18 years of age during the year they take the class.
