| The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner (IOSME) was established in 1976. The primary role of the office is to provide support, guidance, education, consultation, and training to county medical examiners and their investigators. The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner will assist at death scenes and perform the autopsies. In addition, Board certified forensic pathology staff will provide expert testimony in depositions and trials in homicide and other wrongful death cases.
